The Aamerican Colleges of Jiu-Jistu and Karate is a self-defense academy dedicated to teaching children and adults street-effective martial arts. Aam-Ka Jiu-Jitsu is a mixed martial art that takes a commonsense approach to street-effective self-defense. It blends techniques from across the martial arts spectrum to help each student adapt his or her defense to different situations as they feel comortable. We do not believe in a "one size fits all" mentality. The primary focus of the art is Karate-like, with strong influences from Judo and Japanese and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Other styles such as Ninjitsu, Aikido, Kung Fu, Arnis, and Kempo are used in our "kick, strike, throw, submit" style of self-defense.
Our secondary discipline focuses strictly on Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu. We are a proud affiliate of Vieira Martial Arts Academy in Sarasota, Florida, operated by professor Thadeu Vieira (4th Degree Black Belt).
The goal of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is to force your opponent to give up due to the application of a finishing hold also known as a submission. Submissions, as they are commonly referred to in BJJ, are joint-locks (holds that threaten to hyper extend a joint), or chokes.
Aikido is a Japanese art of self defense. It employs locks and throws to redirect an attacker rather than resisting with force. These principles allow Aikido practitioners to control larger, stronger opponents and defend against multiple attackers. Aikido movements are typically flowing and circular. They utilize motion and not strength to off balance and control an opponent. Aikido is unique because it provides an effective form of self defense that does not seek to injure others. This is why Aikido is often called the “Way of Peace”.
We are also dedicated to teaching boxing as a refined and adaptable form of self-defense and sport. We focus on developing each student's unique style through a strong foundation in the core elements of boxing—footwork, defense, and precise striking. Our training emphasizes the "sweet science" of boxing, blending offense and defense seamlessly while promoting fluid movement, timing, and strategy. We believe in a personalized approach to learning, allowing students to adjust techniques based on their natural strengths and comfort levels. Whether for competition, fitness, or self-defense, Boxing trains you to think, move, and react with speed and precision in the ring and beyond.
Wear something light and flexible like workout clothes that allows full range of motion.
Martial arts training is not only a powerful way to get fit but also to develop discipline, focus, and self-defense skills. At Aamerican Colleges of Jiu-Jitsu & Karate, we offer beginner-friendly martial arts programs that are both safe and effective for all ages and fitness levels.
The frequency of your martial arts training depends on your goals and availability. To see consistent progress, we recommend starting with 3 or more classes per week. This allows you to develop a solid foundation. As you advance, you might choose to train more frequently.
